The Ukrainian infantryman has been known throughout Europe since the Cossack era. On May 6, 1648, the Ukrainian Cossack infantry under the command of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, reinforced by Tatar cavalry, achieved its first victory over the Polish army near Zhovti Vody. The Cossacks were considered among the finest infantry in Europe, implementing and refining the most advanced combat techniques, equipment, and firearms. The Cossacks always sought to participate in military campaigns across Europe to gain real combat experience and apply it in defending their homeland.

Azov fighters honor the traditions of the Ukrainian Cossacks and rightfully consider themselves their successors. The 12th Special Purpose Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine “Azov” is not coincidentally named after Dmytro Vyshnevetskyi, a noble Cossack leader of the 16th century.

Not far from the modern Azovstal, at the mouth of the Kalmius River, was located the center of the Kalmius Palanka of the Zaporozhian Host. Here, the Cossacks defended Ukrainian land from enemy invasions, and here Azov fighters defended Ukrainian land from May 2014 to May 2022. We will certainly return to Mariupol, and the Azov infantryman will raise the Ukrainian flag on these historic Cossack lands. See here
